Dealing with Toddler's Constipation

Although most of the time babies’ suffer from diarrhea or watery stools, its reverse called constipation is also one of the problems most new moms experience. As a new mom, it was not only my baby’s diarrhea that I am so concerned of, but also her occasional constipation. Constipation is just normal for babies’ and also for adults. But the ordeal of passing the tool is difficult for our little ones. To help them overcome this experience, thinking of some ways to deal with constipation is necessary.
Signs of Constipation. The usual signs of constipation are the following: passing hard stools, sometimes one solid large or small pellets of stool, frequent bowel movements which occurs less than three times in a week, difficulty in bowel movement, screaming during bowel movement and sometimes some traces of blood in stool.
What causes constipation in babies? Usually, breastfed babies are not affected by constipation. Constipation usually occurs when babies are introduced to solid foods because these foods are difficult to digest or their digestive system is not yet mature. The babies or toddlers diet, lack of physical activity, medications and changes in routinely activities are some of the factors that contribute in their constipation. If the baby is indulge to too much processed foods, too much milk formula, or eating too much rice, banana and yogurt, her digestive system might be having difficulty in digestion.
How to treat Constipation? Train your child to have daily bowel movements. If your child missed it in two days, letting her drink water and fluids may alleviate the problem. Give her a balanced diet, and choose vegetables and fruits which are high in fiber. When she is constipated, avoid eating foods such as banana, rice and yogurt since these may cause constipation. Prune juice or pineapple juice may also help. Never let her take any medication without the doctor’s prescription. A warm bath and massage on her tummy will also help and some physical exercise. If you notice that aside from constipation she is having bloated abdomen, nausea, vomiting, stomachache or blood in her stools, bring her to the doctor immediately for she maybe having another illness.
