After nine months of pregnancy, a new mom will have two problems in mind: taking care of the baby and how to get back in shape. Losing weight after pregnancy takes time. Since it takes nine months for your body to grow during pregnancy, it will also take an ample time to get back in shape. Losing weight while doing your role as a new mom may be overwhelming. You need to consider your baby and your healing body before doing any activities or dieting to lose weight. Who says you cannot lose weight while you are busy taking care of your baby? Here are some of the tips that might help you get back in shape.

Eat nutritious foods. Especially if you are breastfeeding, eating a balanced diet is very important. Never attempt to starve yourself because your body needs nutrients and vitamins to heal and replace the lost blood and wound caused by giving birth. Leafy vegetables, protein, fruits and foods rich in iron are good for the healing body. Aside from this, drinking 8-12 glasses of water everyday is good for your body to replace the lost fluid in breastfeeding.

Exercise and have fun with your baby. Instead of enrolling in a gym or aerobic class, why not do exercise with your baby to remove extra calories in your body? There are exercises online that can help in losing weight while at the same time enjoying with your baby. Dancing with your baby, walking early morning with your baby and lifting her can help in burning extra calories in your body.

Breastfeeding. Aside from providing nutritious milk for your baby, breastfeeding can burn hundreds of calories a day. An expecting mom grows bigger to prepare her body for breastfeeding her baby after birth. Not only it will help you lose weight, it will also build a deeper bond with your baby.

Set aside time for yourself. Although it may be hard for you to give yourself time because you want to handle all the baby stuff, giving yourself time will help you revitalize. By having a relax mind, your metabolism will get back into normal. Seek help from your husband, friends or parents in taking care of the baby and give yourself enough sleep.

You might be surprised if your baby got high fever averaging 101-105 degrees Fahrenheit. The fever usually strike in the late afternoon until midnight. After three days, the fever will disappear, but then tiny red spots or bumps will appear in her back, neck, stomach and some on her face. If your little one is experiencing these symptoms, she may have acquired a viral infection called Roseola Infantum which is caused by Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6).

Don’t panic. It is common for babies from 6 months to 4 years to have this infection. The signs and symptoms of Roseola Infantum are high fever for 3-5 days, appearance of rashes that begins on stomach when fever disappears, and sometimes accompanied by mild cough or flu. There is no available medication or vaccine for this type of viral illness. But you can do simple procedures to lower your baby’s fever to prevent complications due to high temperature.

Here are some of the tips that can be done for your little one:

Just give her sponge bath during the time she has rashes. Never apply alcohol on the sponge bath.

Give her comfortable clothes to avoid itchiness or heat rashes.

Give her plenty of fluids to keep her hydrated. Let her eat more fruits and vegetables to give her higher resistance against viruses.

Giving her Paracetamol will help lower her fever. A damp cloth can be put on her forehead to help decrease high temperature in her body.

Aside from the morning sickness, nausea, headache, backache and the extreme fatigue, she will encounter other symptoms along the way. That is why it is very important for a woman to visit an obstetrician immediately after confirming pregnancy. She must be informed of the normal pregnancy signs and differentiate them from the complications that should be look out for. Being sensible with the knowledge about pregnancy which she can get from her obstetrician, from the internet, from her fellow moms or from her family. Her responsibility as a good parent begins from the moment she planned her pregnancy. The following are some of the symptoms that a pregnant woman should look for. Failure to take immediate attention with these signs might lead to complications that may harm the mother or the baby.

A pregnant woman should always observe her vaginal discharge. Although it is normal for a pregnant woman to have discharge, she should see her OB-Gynecologist immediately if she notices that her discharge becomes, itchy, smallish or foul odor and has color that s not clear or white.

Aside from the vaginal discharge, she must report immediately to her obstetrician any spotting or vaginal bleeding that she notices. If there is brown, red or pink discharge regardless of amount, she must report it immediately to her doctor because it might be a sign of early miscarriage or other pregnancy complication.

Any weird feelings or body changes should also be not taken for granted like high fever, headache, puffiness of face or hand, abdominal pain or any rashes noticed in the body. If there is an outbreak of measles or chickenpox in your area, report it immediately to your doctor.

In your 28th weeks of pregnancy, take note of your baby’s kicks every two hours. She must have at least 10 kicks every two hours to make sure she’s still healthy and active.

Keeping our babies safe is one of the top priorities of every parent. Aside from childproofing the home, one way to protect our little ones is to prevent them from getting illnesses. Raising kids is a tough one especially when our kids get sick. To prevent them getting these diseases, vaccination is the best way possible to prevent rather than to cure. Vaccination will keep our babies getting life threatening illnesses such as meningitis, pneumonia, polio, pertussis, Hepatitis and diphtheria.

No parent will ever want seeing their children because of these diseases. Vaccination will prevent them from getting these deadly diseases. Aside from prevention, it will save them also from any complications of other diseases. Vaccination will benefit your child at present until he gets old. Vaccines are costly nowadays. But come to think that when your child gets these deadly diseases because of failure to let her have the shots, the medical expenses will be much higher, your child will suffer or even worse you will lose your precious one.

Getting your child vaccinated is schedules. Parents should be aware of the timing of their vaccines since vaccines are taken with a specific age of the infant, toddler, child or adult. The future of a child depends greatly to her parent. It is the parent’s obligation to make sure that her child is protected from any harm or illnesses.

With my little one on her first year, her vaccination schedule is as follows:

- At birth- B.C.G and first dose of Hepatitis B

- 1-2 months- 2nd dose Hepatitis B

- 2 months- PCV 1st Dose, Rotavirus, & 5-in-1 DTaP (Diphteria, Tetanus & Pertussis), Polio & Influenza type B vaccine 1st Dose

- 4 months- PCV 2nd Dose, & 5-in-1 DTaP (Diphteria, Tetanus & Pertussis), Polio & Influenza type B vaccine 2nd Dose

- 6 months- PCV 3rd Dose, 5-in-1 DTaP (Diphteria, Tetanus & Pertussis), Polio & Influenza type B vaccine 3rd Dose & Flu Vaccine

- 6-18 months- 3rd Dose Hepatitis B

- 9-12 months – MMR vaccines (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) 1st Dose

- 12 months- HepatitisA 1st Dose

- 12-15 months- PCV Booster

- 12-18 months- Varicella Vaccine 1st Dose

Immunization Schedule varies for each child in every country. Visit your child’s pediatrician regularly for her immunization schedule. The doctor will determine if he can give the vaccines to your child based on his/her condition.

Since my little one learned to walk, she never stopped becoming active. She loves to climb the furniture, the stairs, non-stop running around the house and jumping from the high furniture. Aside from being very active, her curiosity is alarming since she wants to taste everything that looks delicious to her, and everything on her hand goes to her mouth. Since I am a working mom, I do not have the chance to watch over her throughout the day. To make sure that she is safe even though I am not around, I child proof our house.

Starting from the living room, I make sure that all the furniture with sharp edges is covered with silicon edges. I do not use foldable chairs to avoid her being trapped. All electrical outlets are covered with protective outlets to prevent her inserting her fingers in it. In the kitchen, I make sure that the cabinets are locked and any poisonous liquid or cleaning materials are unreachable. All medicines are kept on a medicine cabinet hanging on our wall unreachable by her. I make sure that the bathroom has rubber mats to prevent sliding or head bumps, and the bath tub is always empty of water.

I fixed a room for her where she can play there all day long. The room is tiled with rubber mats and everything with sharp edges is covered with silicone. This is a room where I put all her toys and dolls. I placed a small television so she can watch her favorite shows and put a sofa bed where she can relax. Her toys are arranged in a way that she will not accidentally have head bumps or cuts. Heavy toys or books are placed below the cabinet, almost on the floor, reachable by her to prevent them falling to her. All the soft toys are put in a low cabinet reachable by her.

Taking care of our babies is a must. We need to take extra care of our precious ones even when we are not around.

Raising kids is not that easy especially for new moms. But to be able to survive the daily experiences of raising a child, a mom should be educated with the necessary information about the health, safety and first aid tips since children nowadays are very active. Kids today are prone to falls, cuts, bruises and bumps. It is very important for every mom to know the signs and symptoms of any illnesses or accidents her child is experiencing.

I would be discussing our experience today about head injury. Almost every kid has experienced falling from a higher object or bumping to any hard object. Head injury even without symptoms might pose threat or danger. With our own experience, my husband’s nephew fell from a computer chair with his head direct to the tiled floor. He got a bump and bruise in his head. If you have a child who bumps his head to hard object, apply an ice compress on the bump. Never let him go to sleep at least for an hour so you will not be confuse if his drowsiness is because of the fall or he’s just merely sleepy. Observe him for 24 hours and look for any sings of concussion such as vomiting, headache, weakness, drowsiness and change in behavior and sleeping pattern. If you had observed any of these symptoms, contact the doctor immediately. The doctor may request for a CT scan to check any signs of head injury. Head injury is vital since it is where our brain is located. Any damage to our brain can shut down the functioning of our body.

As for the nephew of my husband, he got an acute epidural hematoma because of the trauma or head injury. But since the hematoma is small and he shows no signs of deteriorating level of consciousness, the doctor is trying the conservative treatment of removing the clot. If the hematoma disappears, surgery is no longer needed.

I just want to share this experience with other moms out there, especially for those with very active kids. My hubby’s five years old nephew was quietly sitting on a computer chair, when his younger brother accidentally pulled it.

The chair lost its balance and the little boy fell from it with his head directly to the tiled floor. He cried so hard, and got a bump at the back of his head. He complained of feeling sleepy but never had any vomiting that day. The next day, he vomited twice, complained of headache, drowsiness and appetite loss. He was brought to his pediatrician but the doctor only advises his mother to observe her son for three days. For the next two days, he is still vomiting yellow fluid, he does not want to eat and he just wants to lie on his bed. But since there are some moments when he sits up and watch his favorite cartoon show.

On the fifth day, he was brought again to his pediatrician. He was asked to walk by himself but he is weak and he sways when he walks. The CT Scan report shows an acute epidural hematoma. And until now, he is still in the hospital, under observation by a neurologist. They are trying the conservative approach of removing the blood clot thru medication and observation before surgery.

That incident alarmed me. As parents, we should be responsible for our children, even without our presence. Especially for working moms who leave their kids to their nannies, child proofing is the best way to minimize if not totally prevent accidents. We should also grab the opportunity of having free access to internet to obtain information about the incident.

Accidents happen anywhere and anytime. Aside from asking guidance and security from our God, we should also do our best to protect them. How? Start it in our home. Inspect the things that could hurt them- the stair, sharp edges, high furniture, the slippery bathroom, toxic materials and strings that can suffocate them. It does not matter whether our house will not have a stylish design because of the rubber mats, protective safety outlets or safety gates, what matters is our precious one.

Becoming pregnant is not easy. Aside from the feeling of anxiety because it is the first time that a woman undergoes changes in her body, the complications that some pregnant women will experience should not be ignored for the health of the mother and the baby.

I am sharing two of the pregnancy complications most women encounters in their first trimester of pregnancy.

One of these is the Subchorionic Hemorrhage. Although one of the signs of a pregnancy with complication is spotting and abdominal cramps, this complication is usually detected in an ultrasound. That is why, having a regular prenatal check-up and ultrasound is important to check the condition of the baby. Since I have a history of ectopic pregnancy, my third pregnancy needed an ultrasound to make sure that it is an intrauterine pregnancy. Fortunately it was an intrauterine, but the sad part is, it has a subchorionic hemorrhage. To prevent the possibility of bleeding my OB-Gynecologist advised me to do the following: sexual abstinence until my twelve weeks of pregnancy, avoid carrying heavy objects, avoid traveling to distant places, and a prescription of Duphaston (taken twice a day), Baby Aspirin (once a day) and Folic Acid everyday.

Another complication is the Urinary Tract Infection. If you are pregnant and you notice light green discharge and your urine has a cloudy appearance, you might have urinary infection. To cure this infection, my doctor told me to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water everyday, drink cranberry juice, do not hold urine in and a week of antibiotic medication.

Every mom to be has the responsibility to take good care of their baby even when they are still in their womb. Prevention is better than cure. To make sure that we will not acquire those kind of infections, we should take care of our body well and eat healthy foods.

My toddler has frequent trips to her pediatrician in a year, and the most numbered is her cough and cold. It causes distress to us parents whenever our little one becomes cranky at night because of their cough. I am very hesitant to give her over the counter medication because of its possible side effects to my daughter.

Coughing is our body’s natural reflex whenever we want to expel foreign bodies in our air passage. Since toddlers cannot get rid of mucus by blowing their nose, the mucus then builds up in their throat, causing them to cough. To help my little one have a good time sleep and get rid of her cough naturally, I made a research and asked some of my fellow moms on how to relieve baby’s cough. I found their tips effective so I am sharing them to you.

If her cough comes at night, I apply a coat of vapor rub or eucalyptus ointment in the sole of her feet. I also applied and rub the ointment to her back and chest to give her a soothing relief. The aroma of the vapor rub will help her breathe easily.

Giving her a warm bath in a shower room will also help as natural decongestant. Run a hot shower and close the shower room until it produce a warm moist room. Take a shower with your little one. The humid in the room will help loosen the mucus so she can easily get rid of it.

Whenever she sleeps, elevate her pillow to prevent the mucus accumulating in her throat. Sleeping in an upright position will keep the mucus away from throat.

Let her eat fruits rich in Vitamin C such as oranges and grapes. Lemon drops is also good in eliminating mucus.

A teaspoon of honey is also effective for relieving cough if your baby is two years old and above. Do not give honey to your baby if she’s below two years old to prevent botulism.

But above all these remedies, water is still the powerful treatment. Give your toddler lots of fluid to keep her hydrated. Fluids also help in breaking up the mucus in her throat.

After the nine months of waiting period, the time has finally come to meet personally that little one who used to swim in your womb. After giving birth, new moms are overwhelmed with the changes that happen to them. To give you an idea on what to expect after giving birth, I am sharing my experiences after giving birth to my baby girl. I can say motherhood is something that you will fully understand when you are already in that situation. Although there are books, blogs and sharing with other moms before giving birth, there are many things that you will learn once you become a mom. Every mom’s experience is unique and expects that your everyday experiences with your little one will constantly give you everyday lessons that will make you a better mom eventually.

• After giving birth, your baby will be the first one in your mind once you woke up from recovery room. As new moms, we are excited to cuddle them and excited to go home to take care of our little one.

• It is only when we arrive in our home that we notice the physical changes in our body. The sagging abdomen, dark pigmentation in our skin (especially on the neck, armpit and cheekbone), enlarge genital organ, dark nipple and stretch marks. Feeling ugly is common since we expect that after giving birth our physical body will get back to normal. You will even feel frustrated if you try to wear your clothes before you became pregnant and notice that you already have those extra fats.

• Expect heavy bleeding, lochia, after giving birth. This consists of blood and tissues from the separation of placenta in our uterus. It will eventually go lighter after two weeks.

• Expect vaginal dryness until you have your first period because of hormonal changes that undertakes in your body. You will feel abdominal cramps since your uterus is getting back to normal. Your genital organ may have enlarged or stretched but it will come back to its normal shape over time. Avoid sexual contact until your uterus and vagina have fully healed. You can resume sexual contact with your partner after six weeks.

• Usually on the fourth month after giving birth, your hair will go back into its original texture and thickness. Our hair usually shed everyday, but due to pregnancy hormones, our hair goes thicker because the hormones prevent hair from falling. After giving birth, the strands of hair that are supposed to shed will fall.

• Majority of women who gave birth experiences postpartum depression. That is why, you will feel depressed and blue at some times without any reason.

Giving birth is one of the most difficult part of being a woman, but being a mom is the most rewarding.
