Natural Cough Treatment for Toddlers

My toddler has frequent trips to her pediatrician in a year, and the most numbered is her cough and cold. It causes distress to us parents whenever our little one becomes cranky at night because of their cough. I am very hesitant to give her over the counter medication because of its possible side effects to my daughter.

Coughing is our body’s natural reflex whenever we want to expel foreign bodies in our air passage. Since toddlers cannot get rid of mucus by blowing their nose, the mucus then builds up in their throat, causing them to cough. To help my little one have a good time sleep and get rid of her cough naturally, I made a research and asked some of my fellow moms on how to relieve baby’s cough. I found their tips effective so I am sharing them to you.

If her cough comes at night, I apply a coat of vapor rub or eucalyptus ointment in the sole of her feet. I also applied and rub the ointment to her back and chest to give her a soothing relief. The aroma of the vapor rub will help her breathe easily.

Giving her a warm bath in a shower room will also help as natural decongestant. Run a hot shower and close the shower room until it produce a warm moist room. Take a shower with your little one. The humid in the room will help loosen the mucus so she can easily get rid of it.

Whenever she sleeps, elevate her pillow to prevent the mucus accumulating in her throat. Sleeping in an upright position will keep the mucus away from throat.

Let her eat fruits rich in Vitamin C such as oranges and grapes. Lemon drops is also good in eliminating mucus.

A teaspoon of honey is also effective for relieving cough if your baby is two years old and above. Do not give honey to your baby if she’s below two years old to prevent botulism.

But above all these remedies, water is still the powerful treatment. Give your toddler lots of fluid to keep her hydrated. Fluids also help in breaking up the mucus in her throat.
